Principle For Frequency Of Testing

The underlying principle for frequency of testing is that the dutyholder (i.e. the person with the equipment "within his control") with advice from the competent test person.
Assesment for testing of equipment needs to be taken considering the following:

  1. Type of equipment (portable, hand held or transportable)
  2. Style of use (continuous, infrequent, rough)
  3. Age of the equipment
  4. If regularly moved or transported and by what means
  5. Type and competence of personnel using the equipment
  6. Environment of usage (outdoors, construction sites, hazardous atmospheres etc).
  7. Results of previous tests
  8. Manufacturer's recommendations
  9. Effect of any modifications or repairs to the equipment

Frequency of combined inspection and Testing

The recommended frequency for testing depends of the environment and type of equipment.
The frequency is now determined by a proportionate risk-based approach when assessing the safety of electrical equipment and appliances, and these will be recommended, for each item, during the site visit.

Suggested initial recommendations for combined inspection and testing frequencies, are summarised below as a guide, but these are dependent on the actual site conditions and use of the equipment:

SUGGESTED INITIAL COMBINED INSPECTION & TESTING FREQUENCIES

Construction Sites 110V equipment

All equipment every 3mths

Industrial including commercial kitchens

S & IT every 24mths

M Class 1 every 12mths, class 2 every 24mths
P & H every 12mths
F Class 1 every 24mths, class 2 every 48mths

Equipment used by the Public

S & IT Class 1 every 12mths, class 2 every 24mths

M, P & H Class 1 every 12mths, class 2 every 24mths

F every 36mths

Schools

S, IT, M, P & H Class 1 equipment every 12mths

S, IT, M, P & H Class 2 equipment every 48mths
F Class 1 every 36mths, class 2 every 48mths

Hotels (not used by the Public)

Class 1 equipment:

S & IT every 60mths

M P & H every 24mths

F every 48mths

Offices and shops (not used by the Public)

Class 1 equipment:

S & IT every 60mths

M P & H every 24mths

F every 48mths

Key:

S = stationary equipment, eg vending machine, refrigerator, washing machine

IT = IT equipment, eg computer, monitor, photo-copier, telecoms

M = moveable equipment, eg fan, kettle, extension lead

P = portable equipment, eg vacuum cleaner, steamer, food mixer

H = handheld equipment, eg hair dryer, drill

F = fixed Equipment, eg hand dryer, water boiler
